AANA

Building community among students and reducing negativity
The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists wanted to help nurse anesthetist students as they transitioned from their third year into their first year of practice. The goal was to deliver a digital experience that would foster engagement, guide them through key professional milestones, and help students recognize the value of association membership,

Challenge

AANA needed to launch a tailored program for 60 students in six cohorts, each with a dedicated coach. The solution had to be ready in just five and a half weeks to coincide with their annual Congress, and offer a secure, milestone-based experience, accessible only to invited participants.

Strategy & Planning

Leveraging existing research and product concept tests, I worked with stakeholders to define content and feature priorities. I used Object-Oriented UX (OOUX) method to model the data structure, making sure our database would support all aspects of the student journey.

We co-developed a content strategy featuring podcasts, articles, videos, and downloadable resources, tools designed to engage students and provide actionable support. The organizing principle: 12 key milestones, each unlocking at specific points over two years, setting a clear path for progress.

To ensure alignment and transparency, I facilitated the creation of a Feature matrix, connecting milestones to specific feature development and deliverables and confirming expectations before design began.

Design & Development

Collaborating with AANA, I created wireframes and iterated on designs, elevating the visual language with their brand guidelines. Recognizing the technical challenges of building app-like features in Webflow, I proactively explored alternative platforms. I rapidly prototyped the app using Lovable.dev, then pivoted to Cursor to overcome app functionality barriers.

The final product is a mobile-responsive app with secure, cohort-based access and built-in analytics tracking. To support ongoing content management, I developed a custom CMS, giving AA&A full control over users and app content.

Impact

The AA&A app launched on schedule for the annual Congress, welcoming 60 students and their coaches into a dynamic, milestone-driven experience. The custom CMS enables the association to manage content and users independently, while analytics provide ongoing insight into engagement and outcomes.
